Splurge, Save, or Skip :: BITE Beauty #TheLipPencil

Periodically, on the blog I will be reviewing products.  My purpose is to tell you the important information pertaining to the product, tell you my personal opinions about the product, and tell you if I think that the product is worth purchasing at full price (SPLURGE), worth considering buying if you see it on sale (SAVE), or not worth buying at all (SKIP).

Recently, I had the pleasure of trying out the newest product from the brand BITE Beauty. BITE is a relatively young cosmetic company which specializes in natural lipstick.  Their lipsticks boast long, comfortable wear with high pigmentation.  Online reviews of the brand rave about the brand’s amazing lipsticks, noting their pleasant scent and beautiful finishes.

Until now, I had not had not tried out any of the products from the brand.  To be honest, my decision to never invest in any of the products came down to two factors: the fact that it’s a lipstick, and the price.

The fact that this is a lipstick, really was the main reason I hadn’t purchased anything in the past.  I already have a ton of lipsticks.  It is hard for me to justify the purchase of a lipstick when I already have so many.  Until recently (2016 Holiday Season), BITE also did not have any “deluxe sample” or “travel sized” lipsticks available.  I personally tend to gravitate more towards sets of multiple smaller products, because lets be honest, how many times does one actually use and entire tube of lipstick? I personally would rather have 2-3 colors in a smaller size, than 1 color in the larger size for about the same price. That being said, while their prices aren’t outrageous (running between $22-$26 for full sized products which is on the low end of the price point for high-end lip products),  it still is a hefty investment for one item, and I could never justify the purchase without knowing if I would love it or not..

A few weeks ago, a received a package from BITE Beauty containing their newest addition: The Lip Pencil. They also sent along two shades of their best selling Amuse Bouche Lipstick to try it out with.

Amuse Bouche Mini Lip Sticks: Honey Comb (a nude beige) & Whiskey (a rich, red mahogany)

Coordinating Lip Pencils: 020 Nude Beige & 044 Rich Mahogany

img_2241Initial Thoughts:

First of all, the colors are gorgeous! The lip pencils coordinated perfectly with their perspective colors.  The first set I tried was the Honey Comb and 020 combo.  The Lip Pencil came out of the packaging, and was already sharpened to an unreal sharp point.  Because of that, it immediately broke off.  After shedding the tip, the pencil glided onto my lips with ease without any additional crumbling.  The pigment was amazing, it really only took one swipe to create the opaque coloration I was looking for. It was creamy, but not waxy.  The lipstick smelled amazing (a light, sweet scent that is absolutely delicious smelling!) and glided on with ease. The two blended in well together. The resulting look had a semi-matte, semi-glossy finish that looked very natural. I love the Honeycomb color!  It may just be my perfect nude! (See photo)

The 044 Mahogany lip pencil was also very creamy and pigmented.  I found that the coordinating lipstick was rather patchy though, but thankfully the lip pencil gave a good base of color. The color itself was very dark.  Definitely something for someone with a darker skin tone!

Take Away on the Amuse Bouche LipSticks:

Application: These glided on easily and the shape of the bullet allowed for great control.

Pigmentation: Great on the lighter colors, good but not outstanding on the darker colors.

Comfort: Very light weight and moisturizing!

Finish: The semi-matte finish was absolutely beautiful.

Staying Power: These don’t have amazing staying power.  They are definitely  a product that needs frequent application.  They aren’t the worst, but you can expect to touch up this product every 2 hours or so.

Price: Like I said before, these aren’t crazy expensive when it comes to high-end lipsticks. A full size Amuse Bouche lipstick will only set you back $24.

Verdict: I would have to go with a SPLURGE on these! They are so amazingly light weight and moisturizing.  The finish is gorgeous, and the scent is incredibly delicious. For the overall formulation, $24 isn’t a bad price.  This brand is rarely on sale, but for the best deal, I would recommend waiting until Sephora has an event or until around the holidays when they come out with mini-sets.

Take Away on The Lip Pencil:

Application: This product glided onto my lips very comfortably.  There was no crumbling (aside from the initial tip breakage), and absolutely no tugging.  My lines were clean.

Pigmentation:  Overall, the pigmentation of these was great, and was consistent between the light and the dark colors.

Comfort: This formula was incredibly soft and creamy for being a matte lip pencil.

Finish: The matte finish was nice, and went well under the Amuse Bouche formula as well as under others that I tried.  It was especially nice under my Colourpop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick.

Staying Power: Unfortunately, this product didn’t do much to extend the wear of any of the lipsticks that I tried it with.

Price: This lip pencil retails for $18.  I think that though the lip pencil is nice, that price is a bit steep.

Verdict: SKIP.  Like I said before, BITE rarely goes on sale, and honestly, the product didn’t do much to extend the longevity of my lipstick.  It did make a nice, opaque base to build color on top of, but I was not overly impressed.  I can buy a similar-wearing lip liner at the drugstore and deal with the crumbling.  I don’t think a lip pencil is worth the high-end price tag unless it goes on well AND does wonders for the longevity of my lipstick.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post!  Have you tried anything from the brand BITE Beauty?  Let me know what you thought about it in the comment section!
